Day 5 of National Influenza Vaccination Week
From: About.com Cold Flu
On the 5th day of National Influenza Vaccination Week, the focus is on vaccinating young adults - specifically those aged 19 to 24 - against H1N1 (swine flu).

Seasonal flu typically does not hit people in this age group very hard so many young adults may not even think about getting a flu shot. However, H1N1 has affected young adults in much greater numbers and with more severity than the typical flu does. It is more important than ever for people in this age group to get the H1N1 vaccine to protect themselves and their friends and family. Researchers believe that one of the reasons the virus may be spreading so easily in this age group is because young people tend to spend a lot of time in grou...

Influenza Vaccination Week: Day 6
Day 6 of National Influenza Vaccination Week is meant to remind older Americans (those 65 and older) that they too need flu vaccines. Seasonal flu is typically very serious for older adults, striking this group the hardest. H1N1 (swine flu) has been significantly different because it has largely spared people in this age group. However, although many older adults may have some degree of immunity to H1N1, it is still affecting some of them. Those who have gotten it have had severe symptoms and serious complications. Now that there are plenty of H1N1 vaccines for anyone who wants one, older adults are encouraged to get them. National Influenza Vaccination Week Jan 10-16
While National Influenza Vaccination Week officially kicked off yesterday, today the focus is on encouraging health care workers and the general public to get vaccinated against the flu. Each day of the week will emphasize the importance of the flu vaccine for various groups. This year, it is important to remember to get both the seasonal and H1N1 vaccines to protect yourself and your loved ones from both types of flu. Health care workers are an especially high priority group to receive these vaccines because they are often the first line of defense against the disease. When health care workers get vaccinated, they protect not only themselves from getting sick but they also protect their patients who might catch the virus from them. Remember, influenza (both seasonal and H1N1) are contag...

Influenza Vaccination Week: Day 4
Day four of National Influenza Vaccination Week serves as a reminder for pregnant women, children (especially those 6 months to 2 years) and caregivers and family members of children under 6 months old to be vaccinated against the flu. H1N1 (swine flu) can be especially severe for these groups and vaccination is the easiest way to prevent it.

Pregnant women and young children are very susceptible to serious illness and death from influenza. The CDC reported the deaths of 289 children from H1N1 between April and December of 2009. Although the deaths of pregnant women from the flu are not tracked as closely as childhood deaths, there is evidence that the flu - especially H1N1 - tends to be more s...

Gotten Your H1N1 Vaccine?
The H1N1 virus is still in the news, as more and more cases pop up all over the country. Being 9 months pregnant, as well as a trauma hospital employee, I am on the CDC's target candidate list for the H1N1 vaccine. There are lots of people on the list, in addition to pregnant women and health care employees. They include children, seniors and people with chronic conditions. This means you: if you have a chronic pain condition, washing your hands may not be good enough. The vaccine is becoming more and more readily available. In fact, on my way home from the doctor today, I passed two walk-in clinics that were offering H1N1 vaccines. It's out there. Why not get it? Keep in mind that the H1N1 vaccine is for 2009 H1N1: the seasonal flu shot protects against swine flu, but not this year's sw...

H1N1 Vaccine Expected to be Available This Month
As we head into another flu season, it's important to remember that we're not out of the woods yet with H1N1 swine flu. The virus continues to rear its ugly head as the world awaits a vaccine. There still is no definite release date, but the vaccine is expected to be available sometime this month. When it is available, people with cystic fibrosis and their family members should get the H1N1 flu shot in addition to the regular seasonal flu shot. You should be able to get the vaccine at your CF care center or local health department. You can also visit the American Lung Association's flu clinic locator to search for a vaccine site near you.
