In the largest study to date evaluating erectile dysfunction and
coronary artery calcification, researchers have determined that men
with ED are at a significantly increased risk of high coronary
artery calcification scores (CACS), a known predictor of future
cardiovascular events.

bypass surgery
In coronary artery bypass surgery -- also called coronary artery
bypass grafting, or CABG -- surgeons graft a healthy artery or vein
to a diseased coronary artery, beyond the areas that are blocked by
plaques. This procedure allows blood to bypass the diseased part of
the artery, and improves the supply of blood the heart muscle.
Men with HIV Appear More Likely to Develop Heart Disease
A study that will appear in an upcoming issue of AIDS presents data
that suggests HIV positive men have a significantly higher risk of
plaque accumulation in the coronary arteries than do HIV negative
men. This trend is a particularly important finding since people
with HIV are living longer because of HIV medications. Ironically,
many of those HIV medications have been found to increase the risk
of coronary heart disease in HIV positive men. Over all, the study
found the presence of coronary atherosclerosis (plaque) was higher
in HIV-positive men than their HIV-negative counterparts.
Fifty-nine percent of HIV-positive men had coronary atherosclerosis
compared with 34.4 percent of HIV-negative men. This information
means HIV specialists should be aggressive when identifying and
treating ot...
President Bill Clinton, Stents, and Coronary Artery Disease
Curuios about the procedure that President Bill Clinton underwent
on Thursday?President Clinton's heart pain came from a clogged
artery. The procedure to unclog the artery is called angioplasty,
during which wire-mesh tubes called stents are installed to keep
the artery open. Read about it here.WebMD has a cool animation that
makes the process clear. Go to this page, and under the headline
"Illustrated Guide to Coronary Artery Disease," click the tab
called "Treatment." That will bring up animations that illustrate
angioplasty and stent installation. The good news is that this
procedure is a common one, with very high chances of an excellent
outcome.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is Associated with an Increased Coronary Heart Disease
Clinic-based observational studies in men have reported that
obstructive sleep apnea is associated with an increased incidence
of coronary heart disease. The objective of this study was to
assess the relation of obstructive sleep apnea to incident coronary
heart disease and heart failure in a general community sample of
adult men and women. A total [...]
Acute myocardial infarction and anorexia nervosa
A case of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in a patient with
anorexia nervosa is presented.Clinlcal records, electrocardiogram,
echocardiogram and coronary angiogram data of a patient with
anorexia nervosa, presenting with AMI were evaluated. A Pubmed
literature search was used to review cardiac complications of
anorexia nervosa. The patient presented with an anterior ST
elevation AMI. She underwent emergent coronary angiography with
successful reperfusion of a 100% occluded proximal left anterior
descending coronary artery.Anorexia nervosa is an eatlng disorder
affectlng mainly female adolescents. Eating disorders carry the
highest mortality rate compared to other psychiatric conditions
(Caslero and Frishman, Cardiol Rev 14, 227-231, 2006). It is
reported that 80% of patients with a...
